When these structures become damaged, they cause surrounding muscles and ligaments to tighten which can lead to more discomfort in the area.

Hamstring injuries are the most common noncontact muscle injury seen in a range of sports.
The hamstrings are a group of muscles that run along the back of the thigh. These muscles can become torn if they are subjected to a high amount of force from an excessive load. Hamstring strains can be caused by the sudden contraction of the muscles of the hamstring when they are in a stretch position. Common activities include rapid acceleration when running or when a football player kicks a long distance.
