Frequently Asked Questions

What causes neck pain?

The dysfunction of a variety of structures in the neck can lead to neck pain.  The most common structures that can cause pain in the neck are the discs, and the facet joints. When these structures become damaged, they cause surrounding muscles and ligaments to tighten which can lead to more discomfort in the area.

Neck pain can also be caused by muscle or soft tissue strains. These are usually caused by sudden forces such as through sports activities, or poor posture.

my hamstring is hurting - what is causing it?

Hamstring injuries are the most common noncontact muscle injury seen in a range of sports.

The hamstrings are a group of muscles that run along the back of the thigh. These muscles can become torn if they are subjected to a high amount of force from an excessive load. Hamstring strains can be caused by the sudden contraction of the muscles of the hamstring when they are in a stretch position. Common activities include rapid acceleration when running or when a football player kicks a long distance.

What treatment during pregnancy is safe?

There are many ways that Soft Tissue Occupation Therapy practitioners can help during pregnancy.

Manual therapy can be used to help you remain mobile and safe, as well as teaching you exercises to strengthen your pelvic muscles, core, and lower back to prepare you for your baby’s birth. They will also help you to remain comfortable during labour. Soft Tissue OT treatment can include mobilisation of joints, taping, trigger point therapy and myofascial release. Therapy is always tailored to your needs and stage of pregnancy to obtain the best and safest results possible.

Your Soft Tissue OT will also go through exercises with you that will help manage your aches and pains at home. Good posture is also crucial to your comfort and Soft Tissue OTs can point out ways you can improve yours.

I have pain in my hip before and after exercise, is it Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the slow erosion of the cartilage lining the joints.  It is a wear-and-tear degenerative form of arthritis that affects hips, knees, and other joints.

Hip pain due to osteoarthritis has a typical referral pattern with the pain most felt deep inside the hip, the groin or outside the hip. Although the pain is usually dull and achy it can sometimes be associated with clicking or catching sensations. The pain associated with osteoarthritis can be more severe in the mornings, or after physical activity.
